Dumpster Rental vs Junk Removal

Short version: a dumpster is cheaper per cubic yard and works on your schedule. Junk removal costs more and does the lifting for you. We rent dumpsters, so take the recommendation with that in mind, and here is the split we actually give people on the phone.

When the dumpster is clearly right

Anything that takes more than a day to empty. Full-house cleanouts, remodels, roof tear-offs, estate jobs, and rental turnovers all run better with a dumpster sitting in the driveway, because the work happens in bursts and a crew showing up at a fixed hour doesn't match that. Ten days is enough to work a weekend, deal with the week, and finish the next weekend.

It's also the right answer whenever the material is heavy. Concrete, brick, plaster, and shingles price badly by volume with a removal service and price normally in a 10 or 15 yard dumpster.

When it isn't

If the pile is small, if you physically can't carry it out, or if there's genuinely nowhere to set a container, a junk removal service is the better call, and we'll say so on the phone. Apartment jobs above the ground floor are the clearest case: most of that job's cost is the stairs, and a dumpster in the parking lot doesn't help with stairs.

One pickup load is a dump run rather than a rental. We would rather point that out than book you a container you don't need.

Common comparison questions

Is a dumpster cheaper than junk removal?

For anything more than a pickup load, usually yes, because you're paying for the container rather than for labor. Our flat rates run $315 to $620 by size with 10 days included. Junk removal prices by volume and includes the crew that carries it out, so it wins on a small pile you don't want to touch and loses on a full-house cleanout.

When is junk removal the better choice?

When the volume is small, the timeline is one afternoon, or you can't do the lifting. A few pieces of furniture out of a second-floor apartment is a junk removal job. So is anything where there's nowhere legal to park a container. We rent dumpsters and don't haul for you, so this isn't us talking ourselves out of work: it's where the line actually falls.

What is a dump run, and when does that make sense?

Loading a pickup or trailer and driving it to the transfer station yourself. It's the cheapest option for one small load and stops being cheap around the third trip, once fuel, tipping fees, and a lost weekend are counted. Our 10 yard holds roughly four pickup loads for $315 flat.

Can I rent a dumpster if I only have a little to throw out?

Yes, and the 10 yard is built for exactly that. It fits on a tight driveway and handles a garage, a single room, or a small remodel. If what you have genuinely fits in one pickup bed, a dump run is cheaper and we'll say so.
